The Phantom of the Opera
By Gaston Leroux
"The Phantom of the Opera is a riveting story that revolves around the young, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father, a famous musician, dies, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents, who are patrons of the opera, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage. The voice, who is the deformed, murderous 'ghost' of the opera house named Erik, however, grows violent in his terrible jealousy, until Christine suddenly disappears. The phantom is in love, but it can only spell disaster." - Goodreads.com

All the Light We Cannot See
By Anthony Doerr
"When Marie-Laure is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and she flees with her father to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a German mining town, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another." - Goodreads.com

About Us
AK Reads is a club that helps students cultivate a true love for reading while providing a forum for intellectual growth and discovery. All members are encouraged to take an active role in the club by nominating and voting on the two books selected for each month. Once they are done with one (or both) of them, members are encouraged to review the book(s) through the forms provided above. These reviews are then used to not only foster academic conversations, but also provide valuable feedback for future book selections. In the spirit of embracing diverse literary experiences, we occasionally explore thematic months — celebrating the likes of poetry or female authors. Our mission is to create an environment where students can absorb the magic of literature and deepen their comprehension of the written word through meaningful discussion with their peers.
